The finite nature of earthly things: 45th Parallel Universe performs Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde”

On October 22, the 45th Parallel Universe Chamber Orchestra took Mahler’s Das Lied Von Der Erde to the First United Methodist Church, featuring mezzo Abbe Drake and tenor Katherine Goforth with Raúl Gómez-Rojas behind the podium. The original orchestral symphony/song cycle by Mahler was downsized to a chamber ensemble piece by Arnold Schoenberg, and it is this smaller but no less grand version 45th Parallel performed for us.
One question I had going into this performance was: how is this piece written over a hundred years ago still relevant to us today? It’s clear that, given the size of the crowd and their enthusiasm for the performance, there are plenty who are interested in Mahler, Schoenberg, and what Das Lied von der Erde has to say for us.
